Fuels of the Future
Objective
To illustrate the possible use of “future fuels” including electric options. New technologies around the “future fuels” have emerged and new solutions have to be found so that these “fuels” can be used in the cement industry.
Target group
Plant engineers, plant chemists, process engineers, plant managers
Description
The cement industry is continuing its transition to a carbon-neutral industry. Various new technologies need to be developed that will have a significant impact on the clinker burning process. The cement industry, which is already less dependent on traditional fuels such as coal, gas or petcoke due to the early use of waste fuels, must now switch to carbon-neutral fuels. The availability, production, storage and use of future fuels are constantly being investigated and are likely to result in changes not only in kiln technology and burner types, but also in operational aspects and space requirements.
In addition to the direct and indirect use of electrical energy in the clinker burning process, the possibilities and limits of the use of hydrogen in the context of the seminar will be examined in particular. The production of hydrogen by using the electrolysis process, the possible storage and application options, initial investigations and experiences with the use of hydrogen will also be addressed. In addition, new concepts such as methane plasmalyse and the use of metals as fuel will be examined.
Agenda
- Evolving kiln technology for hydrogen technology
- H₂ supply and the challenges for its use in the cement industry
- Hybrid carbon capture technology as an entry for the cement industry
- Firing H₂ in the calciner.
- Control technology with hydrogen gas analysers
- Storage of hydrogen?
- Methane plasmalysis
- Electrification of the clinker-manufacturing process
